Paying for Care

Understanding how care gets paid for.

Standard Medicare does not cover standalone non-medical or custodial care. Original Medicare may cover limited part-time or intermittent home health aide care only when the person also receives qualifying skilled nursing or therapy at the same time. Read Medicare’s home health services coverage details and check directly with Medicare or your plan.

Private pay

Most families pay privately, at least at first. You pay only for the hours you use, with a clear hourly rate agreed before care starts.

Long-term care insurance

Many long-term care insurance policies cover non-medical in-home care. We can provide the documentation your insurer asks for, but you will need to check your own policy's terms and file the claim yourself.

VA Aid and Attendance

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit, which can help pay for in-home care. We are not accredited claims agents; for VA filing we will refer you to a VSO who can help free of charge.

Medicare Advantage

Some Medicare Advantage plans include supplemental benefits that cover a limited amount of non-medical in-home support. Coverage varies a great deal by plan, so check directly with your plan.

Medicaid

Michigan's Medicaid waiver programs can help pay for in-home care for those who meet the financial and functional criteria. Eligibility rules are specific, and we can point you toward where to start.
